Human avoidance personality disorder

Human avoidance personality disorder is a condition in which people have an inflated inablity to communicate naturally with others of the same species and exhibit an extreme preoccupation to remove themselves from areas which demand social interaction.

Causes, incidence, and risk factors

The causes of this disorder are unknown. An overly sensitive personality, exposure to bullying in school and parenting problems may affect and give rise to the development of this disorder.

Symptoms

A person with Human avoidance personality disorder may:

  • React to social invitations with shock, cowardice, fear, or rage
  • Take advantage of other people's appointments and their friendship to avoid being present at social events
  • Have excessive tendencies to blend into the background
  • Exaggerate fears about making small talk
  • Be preoccupied with fantasies of disappearing, running away or melting into the background of undesired social situations.
  • Have unreasonable expectations of avoiding all undesirable human contact
  • Need constant coaxing and pep talks to assess the situation with a calm and rational mind
  • Have obsessive self-interest in making sure that they do not get stuck in uncomfortable social situations
  • Disregard the feelings of others, and have little ability to feel empathy for the host's need to entertain or fill the premises with fellow humans.
  • Pursue mainly selfish frienships where the other party has a similar problem with handling social situations.
  • Exhibit ungovernable excitement or frenzy with interests that are individual in nature but require the appreciation of large crowds. Eg: Theatre, Dance and Orchestral performances.
  • Display non-perilous contradictory and paradoxical tendencies to seek out and stalk people they do not want to be in contact with or do not know.
  • Procrastinate in answering phone calls and avoid of other forms of contact with undesirable persons. May avoid human contact by diverting attention to activities which require a certain level of seclusion. Eg: Watching cable shows
  • Exhibit competence and capacity of loyalty and long lasting genuine friendships.
  • Have deviant behaviour which is within normal range of human emotions and does not correlate with Oppositional Defiance Disorder
  • Exhibit gleefulness, resourcefulness and general positivity in daily life which may bear strong semblence to and share comorbidities with mono-polar disorder, also known as the Maniac joy-intoxicated optimist disorder.

Signs and tests

Unlike other personality disorders, human avoidance personality disorder is diagnosed based on a self and peer evaluation, the history and severity of the symptoms.

Treatment

Psychotherapy (for example, talk therapy) may help the affected person relate to other people in a more positive and compassionate way. Other disputable and rather controversial therapies like food therapy and blockbuster movie therapy have proved to be very effective with certain select individuals.

Prognosis

The outcome depends on the severity of the disorder. Most individuals will be able to function as other normal humans despite the affliction without ever being discovered or diagnosed of Human avoidance personality disorder. They may however, notice the problem and exacerbate the symptoms due to their self awareness.

Complications

  • Peanuts, Tomatoes, Dairy derivatives or drug dependence

  • Relationship, work, and blood sucking relative problems
